JR Smith Trade Scenarios

The Knicks are looking into trading JR Smith.  Considering he’s played like crap for pretty much the entire season, had an offseason knee surgery, got suspended for repeated drug violations as well as fined for repeated unsportsmanlike conduct (shoelacegate parts 1 and 2) the market for JR is at an all time low.  Remember, when the market for JR was at an all time high after he got the 6th man of the year award the Knicks were still the only team to make an offer.  That being said I’m going to attempt to propose a few trade scenarios that would kinda sorta make sense for the other team (obviously any trade getting rid of JR makes sense for the Knicks).

Scenario #1

Milwaukee Bucks get:
JR Smith
Cole Aldrich

New York Knicks get:
Gary Neal
Carlos Delfino

Why the Bucks do it:  The Bucks really want to get rid of Neal and Delfino hasn’t been healthy in 4 years.  The Bucks save about 1M a year after this year and in theory replace Neals 3 point shooting.

Why the Knicks do it:  They get rid of JR Smith

Scenario #2

Brookly Nets get:
JR Smith

New York Knicks get:
Jason Terry

Why the Nets do it:  Jason Terry is completely washed up and the Nets desperately need some scoring/outside shooting

Why the Knicks do it:  They get rid of JR Smith

Scenario #3

Houston Rockets Get:
JR Smith
Iman Shumpert
Cole Aldrich

New York Knicks get:
Omer Asik

Why the Rockets do it:  They want/need to get rid of Asik.  I know they want a draft pick but Shumpert is a nice young player and JR is in theory an upgrade over Garcia.

Why the Knicks do it:  They get rid of JR Smith

Scenario #4

Los Angeles Lakers get:
JR Smith
Raymond Felton
Cole Aldrich

New York Knicks get:
Steve Nash
Ryan Kelly

Why the Lakers do it:  They are thin at the point and even though Nash said he might come back in a month, he also might retire and the Lakers are for some reason against tanking. JR is an upgrade over Wes Johnson.

Why the Knicks do it:  They get rid of JR Smith

Scenario #5

Minnesota Timberwolves get:
JR Smith
Cole Aldrich

New York Knicks get:
JJ Barea
Ronny Turiaf

Why the Timberwolves do it: Their bench stinks and it might cost them the playoffs.  If JR snaps out of his slump he’s an upgrade over Barea.  Turiaf is always injured and he’s got another year on his contract so while JR makes more than JJ they can save money by swapping Turiaf for Aldrich.

Why the Knicks do it:  They get rid of JR Smith

Scenario #6

Memphis Grizzlies get:
JR Smith
Metta World Peace
Cole Aldrich

New York Knicks get:
Tayshaun Prince
Nick Calathes

Why the Grizzlies do it:  The Grizzlies are last in the NBA in 3 point shooting and Prince is one of the worst starters in the league not named Kendrick Perkins.  JR and Metta help the Grizz space the floor a little more, making life for Randolph and Gasol a little easier.

Why the Knicks do it:  They get rid of JR Smith

Scenario #7

Sacramento Kings get:
JR Smith

New York Knicks get:
Jason Thompson

Why the Kings do it: Jason Thompson peaked four years ago at the age of 23 and has 4 years on his contract.  The Kings also seem to like ball hogs that don’t pass.

Why the Knicks do it:  They get rid of JR Smith
